Richard Schulte, 93, of Orient, passed away Saturday, December 18, 2021 at Faulkton Area Medical Center surrounded by his family.
Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, December 28, 2021 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Orient with Father Randy Phillips presiding. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. A vigil service will be held at 7:00 p.m., Monday, December 27, 2021 at the church with visitation one-hour prior.
Richard Martin Schulte was born April 21, 1928 to Stephen and Lena (Boeckman) in a granary on the homestead while the house was being built. He graduated with honors from Orient High School. Following graduation he worked for Boeing Airlines in California for a short time, then returned to the farm due to the age and health of his father.
Richard married Katherine Keller in 1956. He had a great passion for farming and dedicated his life to God, his family, the farm and his Hereford cows. He was a faithful member of St. Joseph’s parish in Orient his entire life and walked to mass daily as a child to be an altar server. In his later years, when he was no longer able to attend weekly mass, he faithfully attended mass twice daily on EWTN. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus. He served on the Orient Cenex Board and the Orient Township Board for more than 20 years. He sang at weddings and funerals in his younger years. He loved to play cards and tell jokes, and he was an avid reader and loved to tell stories from the past to anyone who would listen.
Richard is survived by his wife, Katherine, of 65 years; sister, Rita Conard, Richardson, TX; his 10 children: Steve (Mary Jung), Orient, Matt (Joann), Orient, Mark (Jil), Orient, Pat (LeAnn), Redfield, Dan (Lori), Kearney, NE, Mike (Raynette), Watertown, Tom (Jean), Goodhue, MN, John (Dona), Derby, KS, Luke (Jennifer), Sioux Falls, and Julie (Matt) Dally, Sioux Falls; 30 grandchildren: Jill Schatz, Joseph (Jill) Schulte, Father Jeffrey Schulte, Reece Schulte, Tate Schulte, Faith Schulte, Carter Schulte, Spencer Schulte, Kayla (Andrew) DeSaer, Melissa (Danny) Dunagan, April Schulte, Brittany (Cody) Kissel, Morgan Schulte, Connor Schulte, Tessa Schulte, Tracy (Corey) Larson, Cassie (Ryan) Heiser, Michaela Schulte (Tommy Whitley), Isaac Schulte, Grace Schulte, Claire Schulte, Todd Schulte, Tyler (Gabrielle) Schulte, Katelyn Schulte, Kaycee Schulte, Landon Schulte, Preston Schulte, Maren Schulte, Andrew Dally, and Ethan Dally; 15 great grandchildren: Brighton Schatz, Allison Schatz, Gabriella Schulte, Sutton Schulte, Oaklyn Schulte, Hadley Dunagan, Colin Kissel, Maela Kissel, Jace Schulte, Ayricka Schulte, Caleb Larson, Wyatt Schulte, Piper Whitley, TJ Whitley and Ella Rose Whitley; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Stephen and Lena Schulte and his sisters: Josephine Muth, Madelyn Schulte, Monica Kastens and Mary Ann Jacobsen.

The family would like to thank Faulkton Area Medical Center staff for the excellent care Richard received there.

Oh Holy Night. Richard sang it for many years in our church on Christmas Eve. Every time I hear that song, I think of him. Kathy & family, my thoughts and prayers are with you. God bless you all.

Mike and family, I'm sorry for your loss. I found age doesn't matter, he's still Dad. I focused on how blessed I was for all the years my parents were in my life. Richard was a special person as I grew up in Orient. The family was and is a special neighbor to my family. I have many wonderful memories growing up with the family as my neighbor. My children and I always look forward to visiting the Schulte's when we are back for a visit. Thinking of your family always and know his faith in Church and God will help.
